    Sexual Assault Statistics

1) SASO receives about 125 crisis calls each year.

2) Based on national figures, it is more than likely that at least 500-800 more assaults are taking place in the Durango area that are going unreported to SASO or law enforcement agencies. (see # 11)

3) 1 in 4 Colorado women and 1 in 17 men experienced an attempted or completed sexual assault in their lifetime.

4) 1.3 women (age 18 and over) in the United States are forcibly raped each minute. That translates to 78 an hour, 1,871 per day, or 683,000 per year.

5) An estimated 92,700 men are forcibly raped each year in the United States.
(Tjaden and Thoennes, 1998.)

6) 27,270 people were arrested and charged for rape in the United States in 2001.
(Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2002.)

7) 84% of all sexual assaults are committed by an acquaintance of the victim.
(Rape in America: A Report to the Nation, 1992.)

8) 6 out of 10 sexual assaults reported, occurred in the victim’s own home or at the home of someone they knew.
(Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1997)

9) 58% to 71% of all rapes are planned.
(MacFarlane and Hawley, 1993)

10) Rape is the least reported violent crime. Only 2% to 8% of all rapes are falsely reported to law enforcement.

11) National crime studies indicate that only 10-16% of all adult sexual assaults are reported to law enforcement.

12) The greatest increase in calls to RIT’s hotline in the past year were from 12-15 year-olds.

13) 32% of sexual assaults occur when the victim is between the ages of 11 and 17.

14) 93% of juvenile sexual assault victims knew
their attacker; 34.3% were family members
and 59% were acquaintances.

14) 1 in 4 female college students reported they
had been the victims of attempted or completed rapes; over 80% were victimized by boyfriends, acquaintances or friends.

15) Sexual assault is the second most common violent crime committed on college campuses.

16) 90% of sexual assault victims who knew their attacker did not report the attack to police. (Bohmer, C. & Parrot, A. Sexual Assault on Campus, 1993)

17) Fewer than 5% of college women who are victims of rape or attempted rape report it to police. (Fisher, Cullen and Turner 2000)

18) 1 in 7 married women (14%) reported either completed or attempted sexual assault by a husband or ex-husband. (Finkelhor & Ylor, 1993)

19) Victims of sexual assault:

  • Are 3 times more likely than the general population to suffer from depression,
  • are 13 times more likely to attempt suicide,
  • have greatly increased rates of substance use and abuse,
  • have increased rates of early initiation into sexual activity,
  • are likely to engage in poor contraceptive use,
  • and have a much higher rate of unwanted pregnancy. (CCASA, 2003)
