24-Hour Crisis Hotline Advocate

To hear understanding and supportive words after telling someone about an assault can make all the difference in a survivor’s path to healing. You can be that voice of hope by becoming a hotline advocate for SASO.

As an advocate you provide:

• emotional support
• information
• support at the hospital, court & with law enforcement
• complete confidentiality
• access to resources
• empowerment & healing

35 hours of free training provided by SASO. Trainings offered in spring and fall.

Child Assault Prevention Program (CAPP)

Empowering youth is one way to help prevent sexual abuse of our children. Join us in teaching elementary-aged children about their rights to remain “safe, strong, and free!”

As a CAPP volunteer you:

• perform role-plays in classrooms
• show kids how to stand up for their rights against unsafe adults & people who bully
• interact with children one-on-one
• assist with classroom management.

Seven hours of free training provided by SASO. Training offered once a year. ( make link to upcoming trainings/events)

Bystander Intervention Facilitator

Inspire middle and high school youth and college students to change the culture that tolerates sexual violence and oppression.

As a facilitator you will:

• educate students about sexual harassment & sexual assault
• facilitate dialogues with single-gendered groups
• teach youth to be effective bystanders & intervene in situations that could lead to sexual violence.

14 hours of free training is provided (*includes First Responder training. Training offered once a year.  See Training/Events for upcoming trainings).

Volunteering for SASO has been a powerful way for me to help myself and others move through the pain and suffering toward healing and wholeness.

Bystander Volunteer

First Responder Training

An educational opportunity open to everyone interested in learning the realities of sexual assault used as a tool for multiple oppressions, how to work
towards preventing it, and how to help someone who has experienced sexual assault (7 hours).  For more information, go to the First Responder/Ayuda page.

Board of Directors

Become a SASO board member and have a hand in guiding the community wide effort to end sexual violence and oppression. Participate in fundraising efforts, marketing, and networking to continue to expand the SASO family.  If you are interested in becoming a board member, contact Executive Director, Michael Rendon, at michael@durangosaso.org.

Short-Term Projects

Do you want to contribute but don’t have time to commit on a regular basis? Here’s how!

• Leadership on Sexual Assault Awareness Month Events
• Help with recruitment efforts (posting flyers, tabling, etc.)
• Clerical office support (newsletter mailings, data entry)
• Organize and/or participate in fundraisers
• You tell us! What skills are you excited to share with SASO?

Other Ways To Help

• Attend a First Responder* training with no further commitment
• Make a tax-deductible donation to make sure SASO can continue to provide much-needed services
• Speak up when you hear comments or jokes that support sexual violence and oppression
• Donate an item from SASO’s wish list (call to find out what’s on it!)
• Support survivors by not only believing them, but by believing in them

Knowing that I can positively impact the life of someone in need is a reward beyond words.
